[sylpheed:36718] IPv6?

Hello Hiroyuki,

yesterday I observed that sylpheed could not connect to my mailserver but s_client could.
Obviously s_client used the IPv6 address and sylpheed used the IPv4 adress.
The hotline of my provider confirmed that there was a network problem affecting IPv4.

Is it correct that sylpheed does not speak IPv6?
If this is the case please add IPv6 support.
The IETF has declared IPv6 the official protocol. IPv4 is deprecated.

Cheers,
Frank

That may be so, but the world still relies on IPv4 and not everyone has
switched to v6.

I've not requested to shut down IPv4 support. I want the IPv6 support added.

The features page says the following: "IPv6, which is the
next-generation Internet protocol, is also supported by default."
http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/features.html

But I couldn't find any settings/command line options to force usage
of ipv6.

Thanks. That means that IPv4 is preferred and there is no switch to IPv6
if IPv4 is unsuccesful. It should and IPv6 should be preferred.

I just checked and Sylpheed uses ipv6 as preferred network connection. I
have a dual stack network and A/AAAA DNS records for my mailserver.
When starting Sylpheed it chooses the ipv6 connection. If you want to
force ipv4 or ipv6 use a hostname with only an A or AAAA record. Or add
the hostname in /etc/hosts to force your client to use the address you
want.

I don't see this as a Sylpheed issue. It works at layer 7 of the OSF
model, dealing with the application protocols (SMTP, POP, IMAP, NNTP).
IP is way down at layer 3. (Assuming you have entered your mail servers
by name rather than an IPv4 address.)

One issue I've run into is with DNS providers and ISPs still preferring
IPv4, causing apps to use v4 rather than v6.

Something you could try is to go to ipv6-test.com and test-ipv6.com and
see if there's anything that may indicate an issue with v6 usage.
